Statement of Zomi National Congress on its 21st Anniversary

pucsthang150Zomi National Congress party (ZNC) is one of the political parties registered to military government of Myanmar in 1988, under the multi-party election law. The name Zomi was taken to denote our true identity as we call ourselves “Zomi”. “Zomi" known as Chin in Myanmar, is one of the ethnic groups who signed Panglong Agreement in 1947 to join Union of Burma. The following is a statement of Zomi National Congress on the 21st anniversary of its foundation on October 24,2009.

Statement of Zomi National Congress

Today is the twenty-first birthday of Zomi National Congress. With a view to building a better Burma, we established ZNC on this day in 1988, on the basis of democracy and human rights. Many of the founding executive members have gone, but still the aim of the party is striving on together with other political parties namely National League of Democracy led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Shan Nationalities League for Democracy led by Hkun Htoo Oo, Arakan League for Democracy led by the late Dr. Saw Mra Aung and Mon National Democratic Front led by Naing Tun Thein, in a committee known as the Committee Representing People’s Parliament.

During this twenty-one years, as we all have seen, no improvement can be seen towards democracy and human rights: nearly everyday persons whom are believed to be connected with politics are arrested and sentenced heavy penalties. So, political situation now in Burma is worse than before. The so-called National Convention, even though lasted for fifteen years, ended in a Sham Referendum whiles the country was attacked by a terrible natural disaster, Cyclone Nargis.

On the pretext of this Sham Referendum result, i.e. the so-called constitution supported by 92.48 percent, the regime tries to hold general election in 2010, just to rectify the so-called constitution. Most of the people believe that it’s a done deal as the Sham Referendum.

So, without reviewing the so-called constitution first, ZNC will not participate in 2010 election as it is simply to rectify the so-called constitution.
